Topic: Good Days Out
14/11/2024 at 1:19 pm #116014From the autumn 2024 newsletter – article by Bob Dunn:-
I’m in Anfi Beach at the moment, enjoying our seventeenth year and still love it. I usually hire a car and have a couple of day trips, which I highly recommend:
1. Island Tour -we follow the motorway to its conclusion at Mogán, turning right and heading up towards the mountains, following the western coast. This is so pretty, with many stop-off points where you can admire the panoramic views and take some memorable photos.
We have taken many friends over the years and they all love it. Our first stop for a coffee is at Aldea on the coast. It is a beautiful little town where time seems to have stood still; after coffee, you can explore the town’s museum. Aldea was somewhere you passed through, but gradually, every year the roads are being improved and you now have to turn off the main GC200/210, but it is worth it.We then head up to Agaete for lunch, a larger town with a main ferry port, where you can watch the Olsen catamarans loading up to head off to the other Canary Islands, while enjoying lunch next to the beach. We then go and join the GC2 motorway to Las Palmas, before heading south back home. If you have time after lunch, a short diversion off the GC2 to the town of Firgas is worth it. They have a stepped waterfall running through the centre, which is pretty unique.
2. Our second day trip is to Tejeda – for lunch. We head into Maspalomas and pick up the northbound GC60. An hour of the winding mountain roads sees you into San Bartolomé for a coffee stop and a wander around its quaint scenery with panoramic views. Of course, there are many opportunities to stop on the way and admire the scenery if you so wish.
Another 40 minutes or so sees us to Tejeda. The Main Street (pedestrianised) has some great views and nice restaurants, but don’t have a dessert. Instead, head for the patisserie, where you can get some great cakes to take home for later. But also have one of their sumptuous ice creams, better and cheaper than those in the south. From here you have various options; we usually head east to Telde and join the GC1 near the airport, but there are options taking in Teror or Santa Brigida; though remember, what looks a short distance on the map will take longer than you imagine to navigate.
I’m sure there are many other places worthy of a visit, and I am still discovering them after 17 years at Anfi.
Happy hunting!

In forum: Club Monte AnfiIn reply to: Club Monte committee meetings 2024
03/07/2024 at 4:09 pm #110682The Monte meeting was held on the 20th June. As usual we had an informal walk around earlier in the week and discussed:-
– The children’s pool has been fine since the work completed earlier this year and the tiles have remained intact, so far!
– Two of the main pools were out of use. The larger pool and the smaller pool next to it had leaks from the drainage channels and these had been resealed and were due to be brought back into use the following week after testing.
– The new-ish temperature gauges are in place above the Monte Vista kitchen – there are two gauges, one covering the main pool and the one adjacent to it. The other gauge on children’s pool side covering the 2 pools on that side.
– The main lifts are awaiting new control electronics and floor indicators, and these are on long lead time. I pointed out the panoramic lift and the lift at Block C have the same control problems and require attention – if more than one floor is selected then, once the lift gets to the first floor the other floor selections are cleared, until reselected. The Block C lift also had some indicators that are difficult to read.
One of the Puerto lifts has the same selection issue, yet the other one is fine. Anfi are getting engineers to look further at the issues.
At Beach new indicators and controls have been installed in some lifts and appear to work very well.– Bench seating past the pools was put in temporary locations earlier this year. We agreed to relocate 2 of the 4 benches to give members a better range of locations. All the seating remains past the main pool areas and give quiet locations for those wishing to sit and read or think, or admire the views.
– There had been a report of a slippage near the pool, and we discussed whether any incident reports had been logged. And also the timing of the anti-slip treatment which is applied twice a year. If you do slip and fall please report to the lifeguard or to reception, so a record can be kept. (More details in my report to follow on the committee meeting.)
– The main building support pillar and adjacent wall area was screened off – this had raised some concern as to whether further work on the pillars was being done.
However, the work is only on the adjacent wall to fix the large pebbles that coat the wall, and is a follow on to the work on façade undertaken last year. All the work on the pillars was completed last year.– The occupancy in June is quite low, around 50%, and there were plenty of sunbeds free. The Monte Vista area gets busier around 3pm onwards for shuffleboard, then bingo and happy hour!
The shuffleboard area is due to be resurfaced and will be done like the Gran one where the markings are sealed in which will reduce wear and give longer life.– Though not at Monte it is notable that the minigolf area is looking much tidier – it is being swept and maintained to an extent by Anfi. You still need to bring your own Club’s or know someone to borrow from.
Please see my report, to follow, for more information following the meeting and about the replacement fund, furniture, and other items.
In forum: Anfi15/06/2024 at 3:07 pm #109851A telephone call was received from a Jake Wood saying that he was calling from IPC. In summary, it was associated with an investigation into lawyers JCLA. My immediate thought was that it was a scam and so was very cautious.
Here is a summary of my situation. Back in 2022 I asked Anfi to take back, free of any cost to them, my two remaining Monte Anfi weeks. Although I did not receive formal notification that this had taken place, no further maintenance charges were received. As far as I knew, I no longer owned any weeks in Anfi.
Jake Wood went on to advise me that I would receive a call from someone else to go through data protection. This call came through from a Peter Roxbro. After a few questions, he asked if he could arrange a Zoom call for later, and was I familiar with Zoom. He also added that my wife would need to be present as there was a lot of information to take in. I said that this would not be possible, and explained why. He said that he would pass this on.
The Zoom call came through on time and was with a Shaun Davis. He appeared to be a genuine guy. He asked me if I had been referred, as he did not have any background information. I told him that it just came out of the blue. He held up a document and asked if I received something like this when I gave the weeks back. As I understand it, these weeks had not been cancelled with Notary, so no such certificate had been received. He went on to say that this call could last for an hour and did I wish to go ahead. I mentioned that I had not received a maintenance invoice since handing the weeks back. He was not surprised, saying that my account was in suspense, and it was possible that cost could accrue for up to 5 years followed by a demand for payment in some form. As this was going to be complicated, I wanted my son to be in on the call. He was happy with this and was going to have someone telephone me to rearrange a Zoom call. It was agreed that I would continue the conversation with him. At some point, he told me that any recovered money would attract a 20% deduction. I pointed out that I had not been awarded any compensation from Anfi and that JCLA had closed the case. Apparently, payment claim would be made against JCLA. He also said that a Norwegian lady had taken her case to the Spanish Supreme Court. (this is as I remember it!)
I must qualify the above text in that understanding it all and remembering it will probably reduced the accuracy. This is why I will need another pair of ears

08/08/2020 at 9:30 am #58315Thanks Brian,
Of the 3 units I rented for the 10th , One was through RCI who have now provided a travel voucher to the value, another Member on here has been really supportive and offered a refund on the private rented week and we are still awaiting clarification on the 3rd Units Owner.
Where we “fell between the cracks” is that the FOC only changed the” all but essential travel” just less than 2 weeks before travel so AVC would not cancel bookings as it just fell under the 2 week notice period. (by 1 day).
So glad to see Anfi back open but unfortunately our family situation would not enable us to have 2 weeks quarantine on our return due to a knock on effect of other non traveling household family. Also due to lack of insurance whilst on hols (would be typical of me to slip and break my leg after the Monte happy hour cocktails) is too great a risk to reward at this time.
But I hope to be back soon and would happily buy you a pint and have a quick chat in a place we all seem to call our 2nd home !
Cheers
Andy
In forum: Members holiday stories30/05/2018 at 11:31 pm #25669The last of the recent reports I need to post here and, with Williams agreement, have combined a couple posts from William covering his visit in April.
Many useful items here on restaurants and places. I hadn’t heard about Black Pan, near Valentinos though is on this link under changed name, nor Zona Verde in Mogan, or Vivaldis in PR by the harbour something to try. (Pam went to Vivaldi’s a week or two back based on Williams recommendation and had very good evening, and Phil has also posted positive comments recently)
Very useful to know that the new Aquarium, in Las Palmas is good, which I had highlighted earlier this year when it opened and was hoping for someone to visit, I’ll be going there in October! (it is one of the largest aquariums in the world)There is a slight overlap of info between the posts on different dates as some of these were in different parts of the Forum – please forgive as haven’t got time to tidy up!!

8/4/18 (before arriving at Anfi)
I’ve been following a thread re “sun bed war” on another social media site. It has provoked some strong opinions, in some cases quite extreme, on how long, if ever, beds can/should ever be left unoccupied with towels and other possessions reserving them.
Whilst not wanting to start another debate, although no doubt there is a danger opposite opinions could do just that. I thought I would simply ask peoples thoughts on my routine.
I like to be by the pool early, usually by 09.30, not in an attempt to grab a sun bed, there are always plenty available at this time (usually early October). I love this time as it is quiet and like to watch the day come to life. I place towels on two beds and enjoy a half hour swim, the beds are empty during this time until my wife comes down from the apartment to join me. During the rest of the morning we use the beds, but like to swim together, so the beds will be unoccupied for 20 – 30 minutes during this time.
If plenty of empty beds are available we occasionally go for lunch leaving our towels on the beds until our return, possibly 45 minutes or so later, if it is busy, then we take our belongings and leave the beds for people to use.
I know others have similar routines, I don’t feel this routine is selfish but some people may differ.
I should emphasis I only do this if the pool is generally quiet and plenty of empty beds are available, during high season I may think differently. Obviously those reserving groups of sunbeds and not returning for hours as I have witnessed, is totally unacceptable.19/04/2018
In PA now, first time we have exchanged our fixed Oct weeks (tried last year, but my wife took unwell and had to cancel). We asked for two weeks in the same apt, 4th floor or above and in block A overlooking the marina. We got, apt on 5th floor for two weeks but in block B. Not a problem first two requests were our priority. Resort definitely quieter than we’re used to choice of sunbeds up to around 11am but beds available all day. Weather been great a little cooler in the evenings.
So far some good meals, The Black Pan, just before Valentinos was excellent. Zona Verde in Mogan also very good. Vivaldis in PR by the harbour is our favourite so far. The rain in February has certainly made the Island a little more green. On a drive into the mountains the reservoirs were very full.
The resort is looking good, well maintained as always. Not eaten in Anfi yet, but may try Chapter One. We are fortunate to be returning home the day the pool refurbishment starts, but it is well overdue. Incidentally plenty of Monte, Beach and Gran towels in evidence around the pool, good to see the reciprocal arrangement is working, it will be needed when PA pool is unavailable.
Some things planned for next week, Las Palmas, including the new Aquarium, possibly the helicopter trip (anyone done this?). Back to Mogan, we love it there, another trip to Firgas & Teror.
If I can help with any questions people may have, I will try my best to answer them….. but please, nothing to do with claims or JCLA.
24/4/18
This weekend has been cloudy in the morning, so we have ventured out in our hire car. We normally come in October, perhaps the heavy rain in February but the mountains are so green, so different from what we’re used to.
Nice evening in Mogan, with a meal at Vivaldis in Puerto Rico harbour on our way back, can’t recommend high enough. Great freshly prepared food from a lovely couple. Nice view over the harbour.
Anfi looks good, everything is in good order, and obviously the PA pool gets refurbished next week, in my opinion, badly needed, but a pain for those here from the 30th.
Not eaten on site, best meals, Cabo Surestea, black pan and Vivaldis in Puerto Rico. 1 week to go, any questions, ask away
27/4/18
We exchanged our October fixed weeks to April this, everything went very smoothly and we are happy with the apartment. We have noticed how much quieter it is at this time. 11a.m. and the poolside is very quiet. The weather has been good, not as warm as October; in fact we have not used the Air con at all. Evenings are cooler, not unpleasant but an extra top is needed, especially if eating outside. The Island is greener and the reservoirs are full as a result of the heavy rain in February.
Went to Fernados Flambe restaurant earlier this week we hadn’t been for several years, it was very good. The Black Pan, Valentinos, Cabo Sureaste remain our favourites, however one great find was Vivaldis by the harbour in Puerto Rico. Really good freshly prepared pasta, run by nice young couple, the situation is not as bad as eating in the main commercial centre, you have a nice view of the Marina. Best to book.
Only ate once on site, we tried the Kuhn at Gran Anfi, lovely restaurant, food was good, but as usual for the on-site restaurants, overpriced.
The new Aquarium in Las Palmas is worth a visit 91 bus takes you to the door. It will take at a leisurely pace about an hour and a half to get round. It’s an easy walk to the old town if you want to extend your day.
Trips to Firgas and Teror were good; Gauyadeque is always worth a visit. Restaurant Vega at the end of the valley is good.
Mogan as usual is a lovely place to spend the evening.
We have been coming here for almost 17 years, I think we have done everything, several times! If anyone has other suggestions place share them.

27/04/2018 at 11:20 am #24357I see Julie Jordan has suggested an alternative claims related social media group, I would agree the ratio of such posts is disproportionate to the number of members. I also agree we need more members to post reviews, information etc. The home page lists the benefits of being a member.
“information & reviews from members who are holidaying on the resort 52 weeks every year
members’ forum to share information and request advice”.I am not criticising those claiming against Anfi, but my own feelings and that of two other members I have spoken to during the past 10 days the site no longer delivers for the majority. I have posted several times recently re my holiday experience and will continue to provide updates.

In forum: Club Gran AnfiIn reply to: Changes to Happy Hour times
Happy hour times at all Anfi bars are now 16h00 to 18h00. The same at Maroa except they do not have one at weekends. There is also a new cocktail bar by the marina which opens 18h00 to 24h00 every day except Wednesday. They have no happy hour but do have live music.
In forum: Club Monte AnfiTopic: New Monte Vista bar
The bar at Monte has been taken over by a new operator. It is now a snack bar with improved food and seating. Many of the staff were retained so you will still see old friends. The seating area has been enlarged by filling in the water feature next to the kitchen block. It is open until the evening with a Happy Hour, featuring increased drink choice, from 4-6pm.

In forum: AnfiI am staying at Anfi and went for a walk to the Marina. There are two new developments.
A cocktail bar has opened where Mem Sahib used to be. It opens from 18h00 to midnight and features live music. It is shut on Wednesday. I have not had a drink there but it seemed to be well patronized.
Next to it is a new development with a sign saying Children Playground. They seem to be installing a trampoline, a bungy bounce frame and a driving course. This is, presumably, commercial and is leased from Narval but it is nice to see the land in use.
Trees have been put on some of the area where facilities were removed and the mini golf holes are unblocked. However you still need to bring you own club to play. The path through the golf/gardens is only open 08h30 to 21h30.
Incidentally, all happy hours are now synchronized at 16h00 to 18h00.

05/11/2017 at 12:44 pm #17388Hi,
Our experience at court was more or less a exact replay of Emrys’ case. It wasn’t too traumatic, the lawyer was lovely and really helpful, and the judge did look like she had heard it all before. All in all it took up a couple of hours of our lovely holiday in total. Still waiting for the out come, do you have yours yet Emrys?
I think one thing to bear in mind is every case is different, we owned a fixed week which we changed within two weeks of return to UK as the week we bought didn’t fall into the school holidays. They tried to argue we had bought two weeks and therefore were happy where in reality we bought one week and changed the date of it. I made sure in my answer that they understood that!
We got the choice of who answered the questions and the lawyer did say that the judge in court 1 knows the crack about the contracts

In forum: Club Gran AnfiGran Anfi Report: October 2017
First, the news that I would think you are most keen to hear, which is the 2018 maintenance fees. Over the last two years we have been able to avoid putting up the fees at all. This has been partly down to a healthy reserve which has meant no more money was needed for large projects like the solar panels and the pool chairs. We were also helped by the extra week in 2016/17, so called ‘Week 53’, which contributed nearly €100,000 to the Gran Anfi account. This year and next we have no extra income. After a close look at the accounts it was decided to approve a 2.25% increase. The committee, and the management, feel that this is a challenging budget but we are also mindful that we do not want to compromise the excellent standards at Gran Anfi. This means that the weekly maintenance fees will be:
1 bedroom (103 apartments): €595.36
2 bedrooms (66 apartments): €696.93
Penthouse (12 apartments): €996.95
Gran Imperial suite (1 apartment): €2381.43The replacement fund provision will remain at 12% of income. While on that topic, there has been some speculation about whether the replacement fund is secure as some legal firms have suggested that it is part of the assets that could be seized to pay legal settlements. The committee was assured that the Gran Anfi funds are in an account set up ‘on behalf of’ the owners and therefore is not part of the Group assets.
Since IFA Hotels bought the assets of Anfi International from the Lyng family, there is no news about their plans for the future. There are rumours about negotiations to buy the remaining stake from the Cazorla Group, but there is no definite news.
Work seems to have stopped in the seafront concession area. The ice cream parlour wall is finished and cabañas have been built on the Island for the Spa, but no operator is yet in place. The press suggests that the Spanish Coastal Authority (Costas) may reopen the tendering following the departure of the local director. Again, this is speculation. Even if the process is restarted, there is no guarantee Anfi would be allowed to bid or would win.
The relining of the balcony flower boxes is proceeding on schedule. This can only be done while an apartment is in its maintenance week. As work started in January it will not be complete until January 2018 and then there will be some more time needed for running the new automatic irrigation system and replanting. Personally, I think we are looking at Summer/Autumn before we see flowers really flourishing.
Some of you may notice new glasses in the apartments. The old design is no longer available so, as breakages occur, the old design are taken into replacement stock and a new set put in. The old glasses are not wasted nor are new sets put in unless there is no old design spare in stock.
In 2012 the Gran Anfi pool was retiled. We are seeing tiles come off, especially around the steps and edges at the end of the main pool closest to the children’s pool. A variety of glues have been trialled by Anfi staff and none have worked. Now a contractor has been brought in with an alternate solution. At the end of October the steps were repaired. If that does not work then the water level will need to be dropped to allow a dry fix. In the next 1-2 years the pool will need to be drained for an overall clean and grouting of the tiles.
The new Gran Bahia operator is in place with the restaurant acting as a snack bar in the day and an Asian Fusion restaurant in the evening. At the end of October both it and the new El Café were doing a healthy trade. It will be interesting to see how the customer satisfaction ratings move. There is also a new operator at the Monte Anfi bar but I did not have time to visit it. Reports from members on all these developments would be welcome.
British owners still represent the largest maintenance fee debt with €66,000 unpaid from 2016 and €78,000 from 2017. The overall amount of fees owed in Gran is only 3.7% of the total but members should be aware that two years unpaid fees will result in the loss of the apartment. 2018 fees can now be paid through the website and a free week and iPhone competition for early payment is operating again.
If you are trying to book floating weeks it might be helpful to know that about 20% of apartments are empty in April, May & June. Most of the rest of the year Gran is around 90% occupancy, which is pretty near maximum when one allows for apartments in maintenance.
Starting 1 November until early December there will be a fortnightly meeting in English for any owners who are at Anfi when you can meet committee members and question both us and, normally, a member of the Anfi management team. These will last one hour and start at 5pm in Maroa with their happy hour beginning early at 4.30pm.
If you want me to raise anything on your behalf, just let me know. The next Gran Anfi committee meetings are:
22 February, 21 June and 18 October.
I will also be there on holiday, but staying in Monte Anfi, for two weeks from 23 December 2017.Roger Byatt

In June there was an international meeting for UK Germans and other nationalities. It was well received hence the reason for arranging another meeting this Wednesday 1st November.
Everyone is invited if you are in Anfi. At Maroa 16.45 for a 17.00 start for approximately 1 hour. Happy hour starting early as Roger has said above.
The meeting is in English. Committee members presenting the meeting are:
– Aase Simonsen Norway
– Richard Weston UK
– Peter Siegler Germany
– Jens Schmidt Denmark
– John Meykel Benelux
It is hoped a member of management will also be present. In forum: Meetings and EventsFor some time now Norwegians have held a meeting at Maroa every Wednesday afternoon when they can meet committee members, each other and ask questions about the resort.
Starting Wednesday 1 November there will be a meeting in English for any nationality staying at Anfi. It is anticipated that this will continue every two weeks until early December.
Whether a UK club member or not, why not go along. As an incentive the Maroa happy hour will start early at 4.30pm.
Why not go along then let us know what you think.

27/07/2017 at 11:41 am #14392Hi Brian
The gym is very suitable. It is far better equipped than a few years ago. There are cardio machines (treadmills, cross trainers etc). A number of pulley weight resistance machines. There is a free weights area with benches. There is also a studio with an assortment of weights and kettle bells. In short anyone should be able get a half decent workout in.
I switch daily between a run to Arguineguin and back, or a workout in the gym. The anfi cross training group is ok for short workout. But don’t expect to work off a decent “happy hour”…

I thought it was going to cost me a fortune but I have managed to get a midweek direct return flight with Jet2.com from Stansted for only £145.00. I’m only there 48 hours so I’ll manage with cabin baggage.
I was very pleasantly surprised. Skyscanner is definitely worth using to get the cheapest flights – especially if you are happy to go for non-direct flights via Madrid or Amsterdam.
