Latest statement from Anfi’s website, copied below – is inline with what Andrew has posted above.

What seems odd is that on Facebook some people in Tenerife are posting that they can use communal areas and restaurants in their hotels, though not pools, whereas Anfi are more restrictive though offer takeway from their own restaurants .

Please comment if you have any other news.

    URGENT INFORMATION
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES BY ORDER OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT
    COVID-19 Coronavirus
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
    1
    Dear Members,
We hereby inform you that the Spanish Government has declared a “State of Alarm” in the whole of Spain due to the present worldwide situation we are experiencing because of the Coronavirus (Covid 19) pandemic.
This decision, taken to protect the health of everyone, means that from today 15 March, and at present, during the next two weeks (29 March), access to all public areas is restricted, and in the case of our clients, it is only permitted to leave the Club for the following reasons:
    • to go to the supermarket (supplies are fully guaranteed). You already know that there are supermarkets in our hotels with extensive opening hours that guarantee a comprehensive service during the day. Therefore, as the supplies are guaranteed, there is no need for everyone to go to the supermarkets at the same time. In this way it should be possible to avoid groups of people at any place in the Club or Resort. We recommend patience and common sense, because, as already mentioned SUPPLIES ARE GUARANTEED.
    • to go to the Pharmacy or to Medical centres, if necessary.
We understand that this state of confinement is to avoid more cases, among our clients as well as among our staff, and while it implies certain difficulties for the enjoyment of your holidays in Anfi, it is, without a doubt, necessary for the protection of your health and that of your families and loved ones.
In this present situation, the aim of the Spanish Government is to prevent contact between people for a period of two weeks. Therefore, the following preventative measures, relating to your stay in Anfi, have been decreed:
    1. It is not permitted to walk around the streets, (the promenade, the beach, Anfi Island, the Marina, Maroa etc) or to stay in the communal areas for longer than necessary.
    2. Following other recommendations to avoid contact for your own safety, the pools will be closed until further notice, as it is not possible to guarantee the minimum-security distances required in these areas
While we are aware that this an extremely difficult situation, we would like to convey our reassurance to our members, as the minimum services are more than guaranteed. If you do need anything extra, please contact our staff who will be delighted to help you at any time.

The following restaurants will be providing a take-away service
    :
    Monte Vista (CMA)
    Tropicana (ABC)
    El Khun (CGA)
    La Cascada (AEC)
In order to make your holiday as pleasant as possible, in spite of this exceptional situation, we
request that you remain in your apartments, and if you have any queries, do not hesitate to
    contact our staff.
Members who wish to return home should contact their airline company.
The Government has the power to extend this State of Alarm, depending on the evolution of the
    situation.
While being aware of the difficulties that all of this represents for you, we do hope for your
understanding and support, and we do regret the disturbance that these measures are causing
for everyone. The cooperation of all of us and the application by law of preventative
measures are fundamental in stopping this world pandemic.
The personnel of Anfi is at your complete disposal to clarify any doubts you may have in this
    exceptional situation.
We will keep you informed of any new information that may arise.
    Kind regards,

Anfi have posted the following statement an hour ago on their members page and Facebook page.  Expect Anfi to post more info soon.

    —————

    Dear Members and guests.
Yesterday evening, the Spanish Government 🇪🇸 has declared the state of alert 🚨, throughout the national territory, as a consequence of the health crisis that the country is experiencing caused by COVID-19 ☣️. Gran Canaria is obviously affected as well.
The Anfi Group is working on a statement that will be available soon in the Members Area, explaining the situation and summarizing the measures in place. Meanwhile please stay in your apartment. Apologies for the inconveniences and we hope we can go back to normal as soon as possible.

thanks Roger, I thought it might be of interest to other members to see the info from RCI and have copied that below – clearly may change as the days and weeks go by.

Most important message for members with RCI bookings seems to be a) not to cancel existing booking online, and b) as you say above, contact RCI if they have not already contacted you about an existing booking.
RCI deal specifically with the ban on European Schengen flights which I would expect will be updated to include UK and Ireland in light of the very recent extension of the US restriction.

The Government of Spain declares by Royal Decree the State of Alarm throughout the country to deal with the health emergency situation caused by the coronavirus COVID-19.

The package of measures indicated below enter into force:

The citizens will only be able to circulate along the roads for public use to carry out the following activities:

The head of the Ministry of the Interior may agree to close the circulation of highways or sections of them for reasons of public health, safety or fluidity of traffic or the restriction in them of the access of certain vehicles for the same reasons.
In-class educational activity suspended in all centers and stages, cycles, degrees, courses and levels of education, included in article 3 of Organic Law 2/2006, of May 3, on Education. During the suspension period, educational activities will be maintained through distance and online modalities, whenever possible.

The permanence in commercial establishments whose opening is permitted must be strictly necessary so that consumers can purchase food and basic necessities, the possibility of consuming products in the establishments themselves being suspended.

In any case, crowds will be avoided and consumers and employees will be controlled to maintain the safety distance of at least one meter in order to avoid possible contagion.
The opening to the public of museums, archives, libraries, monuments, as well as of the premises and establishments in which public shows take place, the sports and leisure activities indicated in the annex to this royal decree are suspended.

Verbenas, parades and popular festivals are suspended.
Attendance at places of worship and civil and religious ceremonies, including funerals, are conditional on the adoption of organizational measures consisting of avoiding crowds of people, depending on the dimensions and characteristics of the places, in such a way as to guarantee attendees the possibility of respecting the distance between them of at least one meter.
Failure to comply or resistance to orders from the competent authorities in the state of alarm will be punished in accordance with the laws, in the terms established in article ten of Organic Law 4/1981, of June 1.

I’d read that Jet 2 are running flights to bring people back for the next week . As you say Robert it is a terrible situation.

Members may have heard that, overnight, the FCO has updated it’s advice and now advises against all but essential travel to the whole of Spain after the restrictions put in place by the Spanish government – the direct link to FCO for Spain is here.   And the BBC latest on Spain

    #55154

As you’ll no doubt have read, all the airlines are struggling at present.  The article on BBC news just published is about Norwegian laying off nearly half its staff until the end of May and grounding 40% of long haul fleet and cancelling up to 25% of short haul flights.  Easyjet and Ryanair are also cancelling some short haul flights as you may have read.

Norwegian are looking to raise extra finance.

When Pam & I were out in February we had letter from Customer Services waiting for us and went into Customer Services who explained the updates. We have a Gran Anfi points, direct purchase, and a  Monte floating week resale.  We were told that in updating the contract we can move the floating week into the AVC weeks programme, which I’m hoping may improve availability!!

We have just had a pack of contracts through last week, and I’ll be reading through over next week, there are a lot of pages to the revised contracts!   I’m told the original onerous clauses have been removed.
As Wolfgang mentioned Anfi said we do get an underlying fixed week for our floating week.   Anfi said that after 5 years have option to keep week in AVC weeks for another 5 years, or to revert to the underlying week.

There was no pressure for us to sign anything while at Anfi and they seemed happy to post the contracts to us.

I believe once you start the process they do put a hold on any use of the floating week, or points, until the new contracts or in place (or rejected?)    Wolfgang or Richard or others may know more

If you were delayed due to sandstorms, or storm Dennis or Ciara, you may have already claimed for expenses from your airline – though the circumstances are outside of the airlines control, they are within the EC261/2004 regulations for claiming for extra costs.  MoneySavingExpert has some information about your right to claim.

With Easyjet there is an online claim form, not the one for EU compensation for delays within the airlines control, and I claimed a few days ago for the one day delay we had, and have just had confirmation Easyjet will pay for  the hotel and an evening meal.  They have declined to pay for an extra days car hire, on grounds the receipt needs to show the “route information” – so it appears that extra taxi would be claimable.

On the return flight we met some people who had taken up Easyjet’s offer to book accommodation and they were booked in a high rise hotel in Las Palmas and had to arrange own transport to hotel and then to airport.

Some good prices!! – Norwegian have recently released direct flights from Gatwick from the end of October 2020 to nearly the end of Feb 2021, only Saturdays – if you can avoid school holidays the prices are quite good, around £60 to £70 each way for the lowfare – with hold luggage adding about £30 each way.   In school holidays they are expensive, like everything!

For example going out 9th Jan and back 23rd Jan 2021 with lowfare+ including seat reservation, 23kg hold luggage and 10kg cabin case is £197.90 per adult for the return flight.

They haven’t got any direct flights at the moment from end of March until the end of October.
If you are booking to go before end of October, from the south east consider Easyjet, or an indirect flight with Air Europa (Skyscanner  is quick way to get overview of the deals in case you haven’t tried it)

I’ve done a separate post for any of you looking for information on how to track flight price releases – on this page

Thanks Richard. When Pam and I were out in February we didn’t notice the paint problem, but the pool was so cold I hardly used it at all.

It would be useful if the pool could have temperature probes and display like the Gran Anfi pool does.
Not that it would help with the temperature as such, but at least we would know what the water temperature is!!

We are back out in October with our 2 little granddaughters who love the pool, though it was warmer when they were out about 2 years ago.

Pam & I had a letter when we arrived at Anfi asking we check with Customer Services about updating contracts.  We’d also had an email a few months ago on similar topic, as we rented out in October and Anfi had noticed we weren’t there, and suggested we look at updating.

I’ll post once we know the outcome.

    John,
At the Morgan Mall Pam & I went to Papi’s Grill which has some nice food.  It is near the water fountains which are lit up in the evening with some music for about 15 minutes, around 8pm.
In the same area is a Thai restaurant, sushi bar, and there will soon be an Indian too.   On opposite side of road there are bars and a bistro or two.

Last night we went to Sagitarrio which is near Valentino’s – they do some good fish, and on Sundays have a jazz musician playing through the evening.  (Valentino’s was busy as we couldn’t book a table for Sunday on the day).

Last week we went to Cueva Pirata, good as always. Going back on Wednesday!

Quick update – the work on the pavement is currently on the stretch from Aqua Marina to the Radisson Blu and you can walk on the access roadway, beside the pavement, to walk to/from Patalavaca.  There are no traffic lights at present and traffic is flowing freely.  There may be temporary hold ups whilst any deliveries are made to the works area.

There have been deliveries of new paving slabs and work is starting to replace the old pavement.  Once that is completed, and work moves onto the elevated pavement between Radisson Blu and Patalavaca, that is when you won’t be able to walk to Patalavaca past the Radisson Blu and will have to walk at the sea level promenade from Anfi to Patalavaca.

    Hi John
In addition to Davids reply, onsite Gran Anfi have a new restaurant launched about a year or so back – has some good looking food and has had good reviews. Chapter One is worth a look, and some nights has live music (am at Anfi this week, though haven’t tried Chapter one as we normally eat outside Anfi or in apartment)

Outside Anfi many of the old favourites are still about:-

    – Palm Garden
    – Cuerva Pirata
    both in Patalavaca

    – Happy Valley in Puerto Rico get good reviews
    – as does House Fusion in Motor Grande opposite the Mercadonas supermarket.

    – also in Puerto Rico you have the new Mogan Mall with restaurants and bars, am going this evening!!
The Mall itself is well worth a look, has a couple of restaurants as part of the main complex, and then some bars and cafes on opposite side of the road. An ice cream parlour. And a Hyper Dino in main complex and Spar on other side of the road.

    – Valentinos
    – Montesemar – the original Monte Marina, and the newer one past Valentinos called Montemar by the sea
    – Pam and I like Cose Come Sei in Puerto Rico – just check the menu is to your liking,  or there are other restaurants in the same block including steakhouse and chinese.  You have to turn off before the main Puerto Rico roundabout to get to it.

Hope that helps as a starter. Other members may suggest more.

    Regards, Brian

    Hi Peter
I think the benefit still exists though is buried within the Anfi information. The list of benefits refers to 10% off.   The benefit list refers to pre-booking transfers via AVC,  though the other part of the list reads as if this isn’t free.     In fact if you log into the members area, and go to AVC, it gives a link with the costs with the booking form.  https://anfi.com/en/anfi-vacation-club-avc/airport-transfer.htm
10€ for bus, 50€ for car.

Though if you go to a different link https://members.anfi.com/avc/memberbenefits_points/?avc=memberbenefits it then states there is 1 free return, see text copied below, and Anfi refer to clicking a link though there is no link – so back to contacting AVC!!

“- 1 free return transfer between the airport and the Anfi Resort.
In order to take advantage of your free transfer to the airport every year you shall request it no later than 3 working days before your flight departure.

You just have to click on the following link and include certain data regarding your booking and flight and we will proceed with your transfer to and from the airport so that you only need to worry about enjoying your holidays. We assure you that the transfers are always direct, with no stops between the airport and Anfi.”

Do let us know if you find out whether or not the benefit is still offered and how it is booked.

Anfi have published the information below and a map –  Anfi recommend avoiding the Arguineguin junction from the GC-1 and use junction 62 for Puerto Rico / Tauro & then travel via the GC-500 to / from Anfi.
We should know in first week or so how much disruption there is on the road between Arguineguin and Anfi.      When the previous works were carried out in 2017 the stretch of road closed was much longer, and involved considerable delay, though after 2 or 3 weeks the road was completely closed on safety grounds and a one way system set up into Arguineguin via the road above Patalavaca.

Remember if you are going via junction 62 you have the new Spar supermarket in Puerto Rico and the existing  Mercadona in El Motor Grande very near the motorway junction and just north of Puerto Rico.   Both excellent supermarkets.

    ———————————————-
    Anfi information:-
Important Information⚠️‼️ If you are packing up 🛫 to travel to Anfi, and are planning to rent-a-car 🚙, or you are heading to the airport home from Anfi as of next Monday 20/01/2020, please be informed that there will be temporary ⛔️ restricted traffic between Anfi and Arguineguin due to 🚧🏗 building works being implemented by the local townhall. Please see below the alternative if you are driving from/to Las Palmas airport into Anfi del Mar resort.

Thanks Roger, I just ran the cash currency calculator which is very useful as a guide.  On 300€ to collect in my area, it gives best rate as 1.157, whereas M&S come in at 1.151 (oddly M&S list stores within 5 miles of me except for the one very close) – though M&S for me saves travel and parking charges, for £1.35 extra on £ cost.  Best choice will vary for people

Current rate on Revolut which changes in real time, is 1.1674 & will match the interbank rate when trading market is open. So I could buy on my  card now, and draw up to about 230€ free from ATM in Gran Canaria – saving a few £

I’ll definitely look at your Travelwise tip.

I’d meant to mention with Enterprise that they, like Autoreisen and TopCar, did not take money until I picked up car at the office.
But if you are looking at Enterprise take care which site you book through – for Australia if I booked through the UK Enterprise site I would have paid up front – going via their Australia site I only paid at the office when picking up the car, and the base price was 25% less than booking though the UK site, and at that time they also had a further 10% off if you booked via the link on their Australia home page.

The other point to be aware of with Enterprise, and only relevant if you are ordering a Sat Nav with car, so not so likely in Gran Canaria, they took my order but didn’t have one when I picked up car – said nothing in the Melbourne area they could provide.  Didn’t matter as my phone and Google maps worked fine, but if you are relying on a SatNav device I’d suggest double checking with Enterprise. I’d have struggled with no SatNav trying to get out of Melbourne!

Just read a recent Which article about car hire and GoldCar feature badly as do EuropCar, part of same group, also came out badly for complaints about unfair charges.

Autoreisen continue to get a very good rating (and I’ve used TopCar since they split from Autoreisen and found them very good).   We are using Autoreisen next month, so will have an update then.

I used EuropCar when in Madeira last year and though in end they were OK, the process for collection and pressure selling was not a great experience.
Also most importantly if you do not have the credit card you used to book with you, EuropCar effectively cancel the contract and try to book you on the walk in rate – in my case it would have turned 120€ into 450€  –  you may not have your card if for example it was cancelled and replaced if you had a fraud attempt.  My Post Office card had been replaced, but recalled eventually that I’d used a different card as paid in £.
Upselling takes ages, they had big queue waiting but insisted in trying to upsell the model, insurance, accident cover etc etc – took nearly 30 minutes for me to get keys.

Enterprise get a reasonable rating from Which and I used them on a recent trip to Australia with two separate bookings – one car was so-so and the booking admin from an off airport site was pretty poor, but no upsell and they were fine that I had my own damage insurance, their people are fine it just looks as if their systems are not as good.   The other car was a “free” upgraded SUV and excellent, and pretty good service from the airport office – they had missed some damage but were quick to agree changes and update the form.

If you have Which membership you can read the full review on this link

I also used https://www.insurance4carhire.com/ which Steve recommended and getting the cover was very straightforward, though I’ve fortunately not had any claim yet, so can’t say how good they are on claims.

I collected my Euros yesterday and an easy pickup from my local M&S Customer Services counter – I had to have the id I used when ordering, and they have the currency in sealed packs in the till.   When you order you specify the day you want to collect and then you have up to 7 days after that to collect before the order is cancelled.

    M&S give a good range of notes as well – the 50€ pack has 2×5€, 2×10€ and 1×20€.  The 200€ pack has 2×5€, 3×10€, 3×20€ and 2×50€.

    #53008

A quicker update than I expected on the Revolut card – to apply I was referred to install the Revolut app, then once finished and verified the card can be added to my Google Pay – the physical card takes about 12 days to arrive, unless you pay for rapid delivery or sign up to the Premium service.

However I can see today’s rates from the app
Euro is 1.1678 which is pretty good.    If you’re going further afield the US dollar is 1.299

So I can buy Euros now at 1.1678 and draw up to £200 worth free, in a month, from ATM in Gran Canaria.

The card has a load of other features on budget and spend tracking.  The Premium version at £8 per month doubles the ATM withdrawal rate and has features like worldwide insurance and the LoungeKey pass access for discounted access to airport lounges.

    Hi Robert
I haven’t been since Pam & I were out on our last visit in Nov 2018 – as we rented out our weeks in 2019. The restaurant is family owned & run and has been consistently good over last 15 years or so.

I’ve found reviews on Trip Advisor and it is rated 3 out of 26 restaurants in Patalavaca and has recent good reviews – link here

I don’t think you will be disappointed but be good to hear if you decide to go, what you think of it.

Pam & I are out again in a couple of weeks so may well be trying it ourselves, along with other favourites.

We discussed future meetings at our Committee meeting last Saturday, and intend to rearrange the March meeting in Scotland to 25th April, and we’ll be sending out a new email to check how this works for our members in Scotland.

The meeting after that will be 3rd October and will be in the Huddersfield / Leeds / Grantham area

If you’ve held off paying your 2020 maintenance fees you may be encouraged by the pickup in the £ which is just under €1.18 to the £ today, and had peaked at 1.20 overnight.

You can see the latest mastercard rate on the link https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/consumers/get-support/convert-currency.html – which covers all currencies.

This mornings BBC article gives  more detail on the trend and the post election changes.

Remember too that with cards like Revolut you can lock in money when rates are good by buying Euros and use them later. (Of course you risk that if rates improve further then you’d be out of pocket)

    Meetup – 4th Jan. 2020

Following the pattern of the last two committee meetings we are having a members’ Meetup session after the 4th of January 2020 meeting in Cardiff. It will start at 14:00 in a central Cardiff venue. Members who live within an estimated 90 minute journey will be receiving individual invitation emails, but not receiving one doesn’t exclude you. It will be open to all Club members.

If you would like to meet your committee and talk with some of those who meet with Anfi management, and also with other members like you then please come along.

We will be providing some light refreshments, and so need to know the number of attendees in advance. If you would like to attend we are asking that you email us at chair@anfiukmember.co.uk  before 21st December, and we will send you the full details.

    Advance notice –
The March committee meeting will be held in Scotland, and the July committee meeting is expected to be in the Harrogate or Darlington area. Both will be followed by members’ Meetups.
