This is clearly a personal preference thing. I think my recommendation would be to go with Em’s last comment, given that we want people to get comfortable with the new site structure and a megamenu gives them a helpful visual aid on larger screens. Entirely your decision though.
Depending on the device you are using, the ‘My Club’ menu is click-to-switch-on, click-to-switch-off, or it only appears on hover. Try tapping ‘my club’ again and the dropdown should disappear.
Also, just a semantic niggle – technically this isn’t a popup, and that word carries spam-ish connotations for me, so please can we call it a dropdown? Petty I know, it just grates every time I read ‘popup’. 🙂
I was considering turning the ‘my club’ page into a kind of hub – a dashboard with all the latest stuff on it. I think we’ll probably have to make it 2-column if we’re going to do that… It may be better just to provide links to other pages… Will keep it on the list to address.
As an experiment I’ve included the top menu option (some of the links don’t go anywhere….) – the top bit can contain all the admin-type stuff, with the meat staying in the main menu. The ‘My Account’ link is autogenerated by Woocommerce so we have limited control over it – it will always appear at the end on its own (in the main menu I buried this in the Admin menu). however, it does give us (a) a nice login box to access and (b) a log out option. it does use real estate at the top of the screen….
Let me know your preferences…
Karen’s comment “this could change in the near future” makes me want to push Stripe as your card payment gateway – the standard paypal account means that every time you change prices, people will have to manually change their payments. with Stripe, it apparently all happens automatically. I will set up a test 1-day membership and play with it at some point, just to validate my understanding.
I have changed the menu to simple dropdowns as an experiment (this is a tickbox option, so easy to change either way). I have to say, I find it much fiddlier to use than the so-called ‘megamenu’.
Also, the 4 top-level items don’t currently link to anything (they were just titles on the megamenu) – we’ll need a page for each, with links to the subsections – which adds to maintenance…
Karen’s comment about devices is important – we do need a comprehensive menu for those accessing the site on phones. So really it’s a choice between the megamenu and dropdown menus. My vote’s for megamenu, but will happily go with your preference. You could easily change it after launch and ask members which they prefer.

I’m thinking a ‘user guide’ section of the website accessible only to admins. It will be considerably more than one page… probably with video fed from YouTube if you’re happy with that. (Can ‘hide’ videos on YouTube so they don’t appear in searches or channels, only embedded in the website or if you have the link to them).
We have the choice of which meta-info to include on news posts, including date, author, categories, tags. I’d suggest keeping it minimal, perhaps to date and author for now? Can change later…
This can be different for each instance of news.

I can certainly get rid of the blue, and turn it back to the same as the other menu items. I wanted to experiment with making it stand out.
Biggest issue with the big menu is that there’s lots of stuff to link to. The alternative is probably a far-too-long cascading menu…
I can make the height of the big thing smaller by taking out the links to individual forums – just thought it would be interesting to see if it was worth putting them in. We want to encourage people to use the right bits of the site, and I think that one of the problems with the existing one is that, because certain bits are hard to find, people tend to put stuff in the bits they know – e.g. asking questions in their blog…
Keep discussing…. 🙂
I will be using a global database find/replace tool to change all the hyperlinks once (a) the proper url points here and (b) we install SSL. I will be able to use that to replace the name of Emerald everywhere…
I think there are quite a few updates needed – looks like it’s a while since some of the static stuff has been reviewed. However, I’d like to think that the emphasis will shift a bit, away from ‘the only updates are in the forum’ to ‘people will change or comment on relevant pages’. I’m going to start a thread on procedural changes to try to elucidate….
PS Looks like joining process was reasonably okay if you’ve both done it so quickly….-
